Fresh Food for a Fresh Start

Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,

Faculty, staff, and students have migrated back to campus for the fall semester and we are thrilled to welcome new faces and old favorites to the Berea College Farm Store. For those of you that don’t yet know about us, the Farm Store is the retail outlet for the meat, produce, and grains grown by students on the Berea College Farm. Our beef, pork, and poultry are all raised outside on pasture according to Animal Welfare Approved standards and all of our produce and grains are Certified Organic (by definition, organic certification prohibits the use of transgenic/genetically modified organisms or GMOs).

Inside the store, shoppers can purchase these farm-fresh ingredients for making their own tasty creations or we also offer an array of value-added products such as fresh-baked breads and pastries, soup, quiche, sandwiches, BBQ, hot dogs, pure lard, and house-made deli items like our infamous smoked chicken salad, Hot 2 Trot Horseradish egg salad, split pea hummus, and other seasonally available items. Our menu changes daily, but you can check out our facebook page for regular updates about the menu, sales, recipes, new items in the store, what’s happening out on the farm and at the gardens, and other food-related topics. Be sure to give us a like! central appal reg

In addition to all the amazing food produced right here on campus, the Berea College Farm Store also works with other local and regional partners to offer an even wider array of products that we just don’t have time to do ourselves. We bring in food finds from within the nine state central Appalachian region historically served by Berea College. You can find cheese and curds from Heavenly Homestead, Boone Creek Creamery, and Wildcat Mountain Cheese; pasta and crackers from Crumb’s Bakery; granola from Whirlybird, Sweetgrass, and Lucky Clover Farm; heirloom corn chips and goat milk soap from Sunflower Sundries; vegan treats from Grateful Grahams, Don Tamal, and Louisville Vegan Jerky; gluten-free baking mixes from Bloomfield Farms; plus much, much more! If that’s not enough, every Tuesday (3:00-6:00) and Saturday (9:00-1:00) from May through October, the Berea Farmers Market sets up on the lawn of the Berea College Farm Store so you can get all you local food, fiber, and art finds all in one location!

If the food itself weren’t enough of an incentive, those of you with a Berea College ID also get the privilege of the Berea College discount program – 10% off for faculty, staff, and retirees or 15% off for students! Community members can take advantage of our Third Thursday discount day each month when EVERYONE that shops gets a 10% discount! Our store hours for this semester are Tuesday-Friday noon-6:00, Saturday from 9:00-2:00, closed Sunday and Monday. We currently accept cash, check, credit cards, and SNAP/EBT. Your purchases support sustainable agriculture educations for students with strong academic potential but limited financial means.

Until next time, eat well!
