Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,

I’m back from my trip to Ireland–the land of sheep, fields, chilly days, and beauty. I’ve returned to the heat, humidity, and abundant forests of beautiful Kentucky and boy, does it feel great! I’m fortunate not to have completely missed the blueberries or the U-Pick blueberry event this Saturday from 9am to 11am, don’t miss it!

With the departure of our final blueberry harvests, we welcome our blackberries, but there aren’t many due to beginning harvests, so make sure to get to our table early to snatch them up before they’re gone. If there’s one thing I learned from working the market, it’s that our varieties of berries are delicious and sell fast!

If there was one thing that I missed the most while I was in Ireland last month, it was our Berea College Farm bacon. Did you know that bacon in Ireland is the equivalent to ham here? I know what you’re thinking, how did I survive a month without bacon? I’ll just say, it was tough ;). So, eat a little of our delicious Animal Welfare Approved bacon for me this weekend!

Here’s some more fun facts for ya. Did you know that apples help wake you up in the morning, just like a cup of coffee! They’re actually even better than coffee, because the natural sugars and fructose wake you up and keep you up- there’s no crash! And, better yet, they help clean your teeth! In saying that, we welcome another wonderful addition to our market this weekend are apples–deliciously tart ones! We will be serving up some of them as taste tests so you can discover just how tart they are. We will be selling them at $2.00 a pound, but there aren’t many here yet. Come to market early to get your hands on tart apples– a refreshing bite during the summer heat.

Lastly, Berea College will be setting up at the Field to Fork Festival this weekend! We will be selling non-perishables and ready to eat sausages!

Come see us this week at the market!

Thanks for supporting your local farmers and artisans!
