Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,
Even though the store has been open for a few months, we wanted to wait for the perfect opportunity to hold our official Grand Opening Celebration. This Saturday, May 3rd, is the day! Families will be in town for commencement, folks will be looking for the perfect Kentucky Proud food items for their Kentucky Derby parties, and the Berea Farmers Market will begin Saturday sales in their new outdoor location on the lawn adjacent to the store!
The day will begin at 9 with the opening of the Farmers Market and morning yoga to get you ready for a day full of fun activities. At 9:30, faculty, staff, and community members will give a series of opening remarks, concluding with a toast of mint juleps from President Roelofs to officially open the store (dry, of course!). There will be live music, a farm animal showcase, and food samples inside and outside the store from the very folks that produce your favorite treats! The first 25 people to make a purchase at the Farm Store will also receive a cloth messenger bag featuring the new logo and filled with goodies! If all this wasn’t enough, there will also be a Berea College Plant Sale from 10-2 at the Gardens and Greenhouse on Scaffold Cane Road. Grow your very own certified organic tomatoes, peppers, herbs, and more!
For those that don’t already know, the Berea College Farm serves as an experiential learning laboratory in value-added agriculture and local food systems. Students gain practical, hands-on farming experience while working their way through college. The Berea College Farm Store offers foods grown and raised by students working on the College Farm as well as products from farms and small businesses in the nine-state central Appalachian Region that Berea College has historically served. The Farm’s produce and grain products are USDA certified organic and its pasture-raised meats are certified by the American Grassfed Association and Animal Welfare Approved. Purchases made at the Farm Store support sustainable agriculture education for students with strong academic potential but limited financial means.
Students are responsible for all aspects of the college farm including feeding the animals, watering the plants, baking the bread, and even making practical management decisions regarding what food to grow and how to grow it! We are pleased to be able to provide the campus and community with fresh fruit, vegetables, honey, grains, beans, mushrooms, plants, eggs, chicken, pork, beef, and goat – all grown and raised within two miles of the store! With the addition of the Berea Farmers Market setting up next to the store, Bereans and visitors alike will be able to shop for all their local food needs in a single location, conveniently located at 311 North Main Street. As a means of saying Thank You to community for supporting local food and student education, May will also be the kick-off month for our Third Thursday discount program. Any visitor to the store on the third Thursday of every month, will receive 10% off their entire order! The Berea College Farm Store is open to the public Tuesday-Friday from 2-6:30 and Saturday from 10-4.
