Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,
The students here for the summer have been hard at work to ensure that our animal welfare approved meats and certified organic produce reaches your hands at this week’s markets. We’ll be out there as usual bright and early on Saturday from 9:00am to noon and Tuesday afternoon from 3:30-6:30pm. Remember to drop a big “Thank You” to those who you know manage and work at the farms and greenhouses. Here is a shout-out to our lovely crew last weekend who beat the frost to the strawberries by putting lovely “blankets” on the “babies!”
As you may have been able to tell, our strawberries have been a hot item! Make sure you get to market right away to grab up your fair share of sweet, juicy, and organic strawberries! They were growing faster than we could pick them early this week and many of you may have had the opportunity to come out to our first U-pick event of the season. Keep an eye out for word on when the next one will be! (All depending on the growth of new strawberries and the weather of course).
As the weather finally gets warmer and the days grow longer, be sure to stock your freezer with our delicious meats. I know all I can think of now is a yummy cookout with mouthwatering bratwursts, ribs, and steaks–Strip steaks to be exact, there is a sale on our strip steaks, bringing them down from their usual price of $15/lb to a delightfully low $10/lb!
But our products aren’t only good for dinner, you could even cook up a hearty Sunday brunch with eggs and breakfast sausages which can be found–you guessed it–with us at the Berea Farmers Market! The hens are so productive right now that we can offer our dozens at 2 for $7!
The weather forecast is calling for rain on and off for a few days this week as well, so maybe on the days you’d rather be curled up listening to the rain with a good book (is that just me?) you should pick up some of our mint (chocolate, candy, common, KY colonel, and peppermint) to flavor a nice relaxing tea.
Here is another friendly reminder that SNAP benefit transactions must be made in the Agriculture building on the Berea College Campus. (Our fancy little EBT machine can’t come outdoors with us!) Transactions can be done at the Berea College Agriculture Building (230 N. Main) on Monday mornings between 8 and noon (more times coming soon) or email [email protected] to set up an appointment ahead of time so we’re ready to roll once market comes along. Along these same lines, remember to bring cash or check with you because we don’t have the ability to take credit or debit cards.
Thanks and keep on supporting your local farmers & artisans — consider donating to Sara’s Harvest Fund.
Markets will be held Saturday mornings from 9:00 until noon and Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 6:30, and parking for 4-wheeled vehicles will be between the white lines of the parking lot, so as not to disrupt that path of emergency vehicles!
I’ll see ya later this week! 😉
