Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,

With our first couple of outdoor markets behind us and some of the new market employees trained on the fly, we’re ready to hit this summer out of the park! Stop by and say hello to our new employees Michael Kenealy and Brenna Mahoney (that’s me!). We’ll be training a few more in the next couple of weeks and we would love to see your bright smiling faces Saturday morning and Tuesday afternoon!

Fortunately, the strawberries have survived the recent rains– or should I say floods, and can be found fresh, sweet, and ready to eat at our booth. I always say, the firsts of the season always taste the sweetest! Speaking of strawberries, keep an eye out for a “You-Pick” strawberry event coming soon at our greenhouse down Scaffold-Cane! The forecast has been heavy with rains on and off throughout the week, but hopefully we’ll stay dry this weekend at the market, our rain location is the Berea College Agriculture Building: 230 North Main St.

Some of you may have stopped by and tried our Corn Salad (Mache) which is a new addition this year to our fresh greens. No salad is complete without it, so make sure to stop by and pick up a bag to add to your spinach, lettuce, chard, and kale. If you’re unsure of what to do with it, I’ve attatched a simple and delicious recipe which can be found here: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Mache-Salad-with-Creole-Vinaigrette-231197 . Also, we hope to be welcoming Basil (Sweet or Genovese) to the table this weekend! It’s 4 dollars for 4oz bag so get your pesto recipes out ’cause we’ll be ready for ya!

Seeing as the market has moved outdoors, this is just a friendly reminder that SNAP benefit transactions must be made in the Agriculture building on the Berea College Campus. (Our fancy little EBT machine can’t come outdoors with us!) Make sure to email Jessa Turner at [email protected] to set up an appointment ahead of time so we’re ready to roll once market comes along. Along these sames lines, remember to bring cash or check with you because we don’t have the ability to take credit or debit cards.

We’ve got meat in the freezers so be sure to start your morning off right with our breakfast sausage or other delicious Animal Welfare Approved meats! We’ve also got a little goat left over and lots of beef, so search no more, we have what you’re looking for! As an added bonus for Mother’s Day, get a FREE seedling 4-pack with a $20 purchase (one per person please!)

Remember to come out and see us! Outdoor markets will be held Saturday mornings from 9:00 until noon and Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 6:30, and parking for 4-wheeled vehicles will be between the white lines of the parking lot, so as not to disrupt that path of emergency vehicles!

A few extra beef cattle are also waiting for new homes… in your freezer. Available for purchase as wholes and halves, and sold by the hanging weight ($3.50/lb for a half, $3.25/lb for a whole), reply to this email if you’re interested! Generally speaking, hanging weight is approximately 60% of the live weight (current batch will be ready around June and will be between 800-1100 lbs live weight) and meat yield is around 40% of live weight, depending on how you choose to have your animal processed.

I’m new to the scene and eager to meet ya, so come out and keep on supporting your local farmers & artisans — consider donating to Sara’s Harvest Fund.

I’ll see ya later this week! ;
