Dear Friends of the Berea College Farm,

So far at the outdoor market we’ve seen an array of weather patterns, including the rain storm we caught at the tail end of last Saturday’s market. Hopefully we’ve got bright sunny skies ahead of us so you won’t have an excuse to miss us at this week’s markets. As a native northerner–Upper Michigan– I think the heat is bittersweet but I can’t wait to grill out this summer with our steaks and bratwursts.

We can hardly keep up with the demand for our organic strawberries! We’re selling out  as soon we open, but there is another U-Pick on the horizon. Come down to the Gardens on Scaffold Cane Road this Saturday (TOMORROW) from 9-noon and  get your hands on our ripe, sweet, and ready to eat strawberries. But remember, that’s not all we have! We are continuing our sale on strip steaks ($10/lb), eggs (2 dozen for $7), and add spinach to the mix (2 bags for $6). Is there anything fancier or more simple than a spinach strawberry salad with almonds and dash of balsamic vinaigrette? So easy and so delicious!

Saturday is also the donation day for Sara’s Harvest Fund. Consider making a monetary donation or buy an extra bag of kale to donate to the Berea Food Bank.

Here’s a fun fact for you! Did you know that here at our farm we minimize our fuel usage through the use of biodiesel? Yep, it’s true. We pick up our oil from local businesses and create our very own biodiesel to use in our tractors. That’s just another one of the many ways we work to reduce our environmental impact here at Berea College.

In other news, the farm has received a new order of baby chicks that we will raise to be another one of our Animal Welfare Approved products in the future (once they’re less fuzzy and cute of course). The farm is also expecting a few more calves this spring/summer to add to the herd, so keep an eye out as you’re driving by for “tiny” new additions!

I’m in DC this week, but I’ll see you again next week! 😉
